Top Ten Tuesday: Books We Read in One Sitting

This was a fun topic that had us rifling through our shelves for some of our most memorable reads both old and new. Thanks to That Artsy Reader Girl for the Top Ten Tuesday topic!

Indiana’s Five

Water Tales by Alice Hoffman
This one was a great “one sitting” read and if I’m remembering correctly I read it a few times during summer breaks as a kid. It includes both Aquamarine and Indigo. 

Coraline by Neil Gaiman 
I have read this one a few times now and there’s something about the spookiness of the writing style that’s perfect for zipping through on a long car ride home across dark and winding streets. 

We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson 
It’s short, slightly disturbing and suspenseful. Hands-down a perfect one-sitting read. 

Shout by Laurie Halse Anderson  
This one was intense and written by one of my favorite authors so I couldn’t help but read it in a single go. 

Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh
This sliver of a fantasy novel was an impulse-buy that paid off, transporting me to a strange land for just an hour or two. 

Pete’s five:

Stitches by David Small
Graphic novels are usually easy to read quickly, but I was surprised I read this memoir as fast as I did given its grim subject matter. Small’s coming-of-age story is brutal, but it keeps you hooked until the end.

A Darkling Plain by Philip Reeve
Though it’s the longest book in the Mortal Engines quartet, I have read this steampunk finale in one sitting on a few occasions. You can’t convince me this isn’t a perfect series conclusion.

Witch Hat Atelier #1 by Kamome Shirahama
The only reason I didn’t actually read this in one sitting is because I deliberately savored it one chapter at a time. This magic-steeped manga is one of my favorite graphic novels, and the series has gotten richer with each installment.

News of the World by Paulette Jiles
Unlike Jiles’s other work, this novella is a mostly lighthearted adventure that reads easily. Perfect for a rainy afternoon when you need to escape the weather.

Your Fathers, Where are They? And the Prophets, Do They Live Forever? by Dave Eggers
For just shy of a year, I had a great job working at the Strand Bookstore in New York City. Once a week, I worked at a mini location in a Club Monaco, and I spend most of my shift reading books off the shelves. I was able to read this whole book in a single shift, and it was a delight.
