We have plenty of books that we were really excited to buy but have just been sitting on our shelves, gathering dust for . . . a long time. This year, we’re really trying to focus on getting to all of these books. Here’s a sampling of them (for the full list, head to our Mega 2021 tbr).
Thanks to That Artsy Reader Girl for the prompt!
Pete’s Five:
Dictionary of the Khazars by Milorad Pavić
I stumbled upon this one while working at The Strand bookstore in New York City. Though Indiana and I planned to read it together, it’s been on our shelves for years, staring at us.
The Swerve by Stephen Greenblatt
I bought this one as a gift for my late grandfather and meant to read it so we could discuss it together. I don’t think he ever read it, but I still hope to at some point this year.
The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell
Confession: we bought this one during our first year of dating many years ago and planned to read it together. This will be the year!
The Explorers Guild by Jon Baird and Kevin Costner
Indiana got this one for me as a Christmas gift a few years ago, and while I love the premise, I just haven’t gotten around to reading it.
Hav by Ian Morris
I found this one in the Northshire Bookstore in Manchester, Vermont, and while I’ve been captivated by its intriguing setting for years, it’s been on my shelf untouched.
Indiana’s Five:
To Shake the Sleeping Self by Jedidiah Jenkins
I picked this one up a few years ago and I’ve no idea why I haven’t picked it up yet. It seems like it’d be the perfect book to read during the pandemic.
Disappearing Earth by Julia Phillips
I got this one as soon as it came out in paperback and I was so excited to finally have it. And then I just set it on the shelf and haven’t touched it since. Sigh.
The Overstory by Richard Powers
I was lucky enough to find this at a used book sale shortly after it came out. I’ve heard so many good things about it so hopefully I’ll be able to get to it this year.
Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo
Yet another book that I was wicked excited to read (even got a bookmark in it so it’s ready to go), but I put it beside my bed and haven’t read past the first page since I first bought it.
The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks
I got this one as a Christmas gift when I was a kid and although I’ve wanted to read it ever since I just haven’t gotten around to it.
I hope you can both read these soon!
