Indiana’s five
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
I haven’t read it in a few years but I’ve always enjoyed this fable-like book.
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
While this one is nearly tied with Villette, I think I’ll stick with my original favorite.
War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy
This one isn’t my favorite, however, it’s the longest classic I enjoyed and when you’re stranded on a desert island I imagine that a lengthy book would help keep boredom at bay.
The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo
It seems like one would also want a comforting book on a desert island and I can’t think of a more comforting storyteller than Kate DiCamillo.
Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan
A perfect escape book for all those times when the desert island is starting to feel much too small.
Pete’s five
Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson
It’s hard to pick just one book from a series, but I had to go with the second book. It completes the arc that the first book started, and it has some of my favorite moments from any fantasy series.
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
This one is almost cheating since it may as well be three or four novels in one, but this is an epic classic I always come back to.
News of the World by Paulette Jiles
This lighthearted western adventure is the perfect escapist novel when you’re trapped alone on an island.
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers
The cast of this sci-fi slice-of-life story would keep me company and probably help me retain my sanity after months of isolation.
A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin
Though I can probably read this in a couple of hours, Earthsea would be a wonderful world to escape to (as long as I didn’t find its many islands and oceans depressing).
